Day 7: Sat 19 Dec: Uluru to Cadney Roadhouse 595km

We woke up at 6.30am and because we had showered and packed everything the night before, we just had to basically hitch and go. Well, after a coffee anyway!

We were on the road by 7.15am. It was still cool (sleeping bags came into play as usual during the night!) about 26 degrees with the biggest, bluest, clearest big sky yet!

Laura drove the first 250km and had a bit of a scary moment, when a truck she was overtaking suddenly veered over, forcing her tyres onto the rubble but she managed to steer out of it. All our hearts were in our mouths though as memories of our accident came flooding back.

At 9.30 we refueled at Erldunda $1.71) and it was already 33 degrees.

Steve spent the journey making up limericks!

There was a young man from Erldunda
Whose farts they sounded like thunder.
His mum said "Hey Jack,
Put a cork in your crack!
You're making the rest of us chundeR!!"

And this one:

There was a young lady called Laura
Who'd tell stories that would bore ya.
Her boyfriend Steve
Used to get peeved
So pretended to listen but ignored 'er!!

And this.

There was a young fella named Max
Who wanted to camp but shit his dacks.
His mum got a gun
And said "Son go have fun!
Just get in the car and RELAX!"

And this too!

There was a young fella called Dan
Who had his head stuck in the sand.
His dad said "Boy,
Life's full of joy!
Just open your eyes n' be a man!"

There was another one about Steve himself, but that one was too rude for publication!!

We crossed the Border into South Australia at 10.45am. Temp was 34 degrees. Someone had kindly left a dog bowl with water in it...or maybe just forgot it?

We tried to remember where it had been hottest so far and it was actually between Mt Isa and Camooweal!  We were hearing reports of Melbourne hitting 40 plus though, so maybe the Red Centre was just a practice run hahaha. But really, we haven't found it particularly hot. We are used to it in Townsvills I guess and we've tried to stop at places that have water to swim in (or at least mud to wade in!), as much as possible. And it really does get cold at night so it's not hard to sleep, especially since we have two really good strong fans inside the van.

We left the Border at 11am. It was now 37 degrees and we continued to head south towards Marla Roadhouse for fuel for fuel with the idea of possibly stopping at Cadney Roadhouse for the night, despite it having mixed reviews on Wikicamps...

As we neared Marla, we saw several flat topped mountains - mesas we think they're called.

And suddenly, about 50km north of Cadney, at 1.37pm (S.A Time) it hits 40 degrees!  At 1.39pm it then hits 41 degrees, but really who's counting?!  We also spotted a few Dust Devils, or mini twisters as we neared Cadney.

The cloud formations were quite interesting with flat grey bottoms and fluffy tops.

At 2.30pm we arrived at Cadney Homestead. Refueled for $1.60 and set up in 10 minutes between two trees in their completely empty campground, before jumping into their awesome little swimming pool! 42 degrees and we were like pigs in mud!

We spent the rest of the afternoon chilling at the pool with ice creams and cider. There was a good breeze blowing which kept us fairly cool.

Steve got chatting to a group of locals and they taught himself few words in their language such as Papa for make dog and Hunga for female dog! It was a very cultural experience!

About 5.30pm we got pecking so polished off a yummy bowl of chips and gravy instead of bothering to make dinner!! So healthy NOT!  Haha.

Then we watched half of the movie Wyatt Erp before falling into bed.
