Day 22: Sat 2 Jan: Hillston to Bourke 416km

Interesting night; we went to bed at 33 degrees and were woken about 3 hours later by a really cold windstorm that came out of nowhere and nearly lifted the van off its legs!

We lurched out of bed in our birthday suits to roll in the awning before it turned into a spinnaker!  Lucky nobody was around as we'd have made a hilarious sight half asleep yelling above the gale at each other with not a stitch on!!

We went back to bed and had just fallen asleep when Spike starts vomiting everywhere. So we were up again, stumbling around trying to get him outside!  Oh joy! How relaxing!

So we slept in big time in the morning and didn't leave til 10am. But we'd decided to head 400km for Bourke and spend two nights there, so it wasn't like we had to rush anyway.

It was 29 degrees when we left the beautiful spot at Billabourie; if we ever own a campground, this is what we'd model or on. Absolutely stunning.

So we headed back up the Kidman Way towards the working gold mining town of Cobar. The weather was overcast but not raining - yet!

We invented a new game to play in the car - Fly Hockey. It involves blowing a fly across the car onto the other person, by lowering your window at exactly the right moment, so as to keep it in the car. Laura won when the fly shot out of Steve's window at about 80kph! Very entertaining!!

The Kidman Hwy is pretty long and there were no fuel stops along the 250km between Hillston and Cobar (that's why we brought two jerry cans with us!). There were a lot of Stations along the way though and the landscape was quite green and surprisingly lush. We did unfortunately run over a Goanna around Mt Hope, which was sunning itself on the bitumen but suddenly decided to run into our path. The last thing you'd ever want to do out here  (especially when towing at 100kph) is to swerve, so sadly he bought it under our Coopers :(

Nearing Cobar there were a lot of feral goats all over the road. Luckily they got out of the way in time!  Bloody dangerous.

We did notice that there were absolutely no termite mounds here. Despite the fact the landscape looked pretty much the same as the outback destinations we've visited there was not one. Interesting.

On the way into Cobar, we stopped off at Fort Bourke working Gold Mine. Awesome view

About 50km south of Bourke it started to rain. Yup, middle of summer in the driest hottest area of the country and.. It's raining!!! Oh yeah we are indeed the bloody Rainmakers!

We arrived into Bourke about 2.30pm. The caravan park was surprisingly green and grass. We set up (in the rain) and then went for a reccy around the town.

To say it was dead would be an over statement.

We were the only people in the whole town that is until we found the Port of Bourke hotel at 4pm. The whole town (about 12 people) were in there and all seemed very merry and it seemed we had run into the local Tourette's support group as we listened to their banter. The air turned a very deep shade of blue with all the expletives being thrown around.

We did do some window shopping in the Main Street, or rather, roller shutter shopping since every window was boarded up and locked down, like it was preparing for a cyclone... Well I guess it is Saturday night in Bourke after all.

We took a look at the riverboat wharf across the road which was quite attractive.

We went to the bottle shop which had interesting decor.... very welcoming...

And some interesting signage...

Enough said. So fair to say Bourke is a diamond in the rough; it has so much potential, but it is not currently being realized.

We had spag bol for dinner in the van, since we were not that comfortable venturing into town after dark and met a lovely family who are relocating their entire family from SA to the Sunshine Coast and good on em :)

The rain was coming down and we checked the forecast,  which had a severe weather warning heading north!  We adjusted our schedule yet again and decided to leave the next day and head for Cunnamulla 260km away.

We watched a Wyatt Earp video and turned in about 10pm while the rain fell steadily and softly on the roof.
